A Helping Hand- My Volunteer Experience
My name is Anna Hall, a volunteer at Asperger Works. I am a Communication Disorders major at UMass Amherst, minoring in psychology and linguistics. I began volunteering at Asperger Works because I am intending to pursue a career in speech language pathology, working specifically with individuals on the Autism Spectrum and with Asperger’s syndrome. I found this lovely organization and thought it would be a great place to learn about Asperger’s and get experience working with and helping those individuals. I wanted to help improve the accessibility to jobs for individuals in which this area may be difficult. I learned a lot in my studies about what is available for individuals with these disorders, what services are provided to help them integrate with society, how they are treated, and the kind of help that is there for them in order for them succeed. I knew that there was so much room for improvement and so much that still needs to be done to ensure they have equal opportunity to achieve their goals and be successful. I am so glad that I found Asperger Works and I am very proud to be volunteering for an organization that is helping close that opportunity gap.
